Assembly Elections : There have been many ups and downs in Delhi state politics. After independence, the Delhi Legislative Assembly was formed in 1951. Assembly elections were held in 1952. Brahma Prakash first became the chief minister, but after some time the assembly ceased to exist and Delhi was made a full union territory.
Elections held in 1993 after delimitation
The reins of power came into the hands of the Centre. The Lieutenant Governor continued to run the power of the state as the representative of the Centre. Delhi was a Union Territory for a long time. The reorganisation of the Assembly was done in 1991 on the demand of the people. After the delimitation, elections were held in 1993. The BJP won 49 seats.
Madanlal Khurana became the chief minister on December 2, 1993
The Congress had to settle for only 14 seats. As the third party, the Janata Dal won four seats. BJP’s Madanlal Khurana became the chief minister of the state on 2 December 1993. He won from Moti Nagar assembly seat. Khurana, who belonged to the Punjabi community, was a grassroots leader.
Khurana used to come down on the streets with a broom
When Khurana was the chief minister, he used to take to the streets to clean himself with a broom in his hands. There was a time in his life when he was accused of participating in the 1996 Hawala scandal while he was the chief minister. It was said that his name was also involved in the Jain Hawala Diary scandal.
Resigned on corruption charges
Khurana was accused of taking Rs three lakh from the Jain brothers, a hawala trader, in 1989. So that the BJP does not weaken in front of the opposition parties, Madanlal Khurana himself came forward and resigned from the post, talking about cooperating in the investigation. The resignation given on moral grounds was appreciated by the people. He was the Chief Minister of Delhi for two years and 86 days.
Sahib Singh Verma takes charge of Delhi
In his place, the BJP has appointed Sahib Singh Verma as the chief minister. However, the court later granted a clean chit to Madanlal Khurana. A section of BJP leaders and activists wanted to see him sitting on the chief minister’s chair again, but the party did not give him another chance.
Sahib Singh Verma was also removed before the assembly elections. In his place, Sushma Swaraj has been given the chief minister’s chair. That is, the BJP’s five-year rule was also full of ups and downs.
