Not a single woman in 21 seats: Even though the major parties have been stingy in giving tickets to women in the Delhi assembly elections, they are strengthening their claims in this election. In this assembly election, the number of women candidates is the highest in all the elections held so far.
This time, 96 women are contesting from various assembly seats. The last 2008 assembly elections had the highest number of 81 women candidates. This was followed by a decrease in the number of women candidates in the 2013 and 2015 elections. 59 women contested in 1993, 57 in 1998, 78 in 2003, 81 in 2008, 71 in 2013, 66 in 2015 and 79 in 2020.
Not a single woman candidate in 21 assembly seats
There are 96 women candidates in the current assembly elections. Despite this, there are 21 out of 70 assemblies where there is not a single woman candidate. These include Ambedkar Nagar, Babarpur, Badarpur, Badli, Chandni Chowk, Delhi Cantt, Dwarka, Gandhi Nagar, Jangpura, Rohini, Sangam Vihar, Shahdara, Timarpur, Burari, Moti Nagar, Model Town, Rajinder Nagar and others. At the same time, 79 women contested in the 2020 assembly elections. Then there were 23 constituencies where there was not a single woman candidate.
Highest number of candidates since 2013
In the current assembly elections, the largest number of candidates are contesting after the 2013 assembly elections. In 2013, 810 candidates contested the election. It included 739 male and 71 female candidates. After this, the number of candidates in the election has decreased. In the 2015 election, there were 673 candidates. There were 606 male and 66 female candidates. A total of 672 candidates were cleared for the 2020 election. There were 593 male candidates. There were 79 women candidates. This time, 699 candidates are contesting.
The unbreakable record of the 1993 election…
In the first election in Delhi, the candidates had contested the election. Then 1315 candidates had contested the election. This record has not been broken yet. However, 1522 nominations were filed in this election. After checking the enrolment papers and withdrawal of names, the number of candidates reached 699.
