Karnail Singh is the richest candidate: Karnail Singh has emerged as the richest candidate in the Delhi Assembly elections to be held on February 5. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Shakur Basti seat Karnail Singh has assets worth Rs 259 crore, the highest among 699 candidates. This information has come in a report released by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) on Monday (January 27).
The report also said that five candidates have assets worth more than Rs 100 crore and most of the 10 richest candidates are from the BJP (5 candidates), followed by three from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and two from the Congress. At the same time, the assets of 222 (31.76%) candidates have been declared less than 10 lakh. The report also said that three independent candidates have declared their assets null.
Serious criminal cases registered against 29 AAP candidates
According to the report, among the three major political parties, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has the highest number of candidates with serious criminal cases registered against them. The 29 candidates of AAP have serious cases like murder, kidnapping, assault and rape. Following this, criminal cases have been registered against 13 Congress and 9 BJP candidates. The report also said that the Supreme Court’s guidelines had no effect on these parties and they were distributing tickets in the old fashioned way. Overall, 19% of the candidates have criminal cases.
Increase in the average age of candidates in elections
The average age of candidates in the election has increased. In 2020, 199 candidates were in the 41-50 age group, while 235 candidates are in this age group this time. However, the number of candidates in the age group of 25 to 30 years has come down from 57 to 46. In addition, the report also took a closer look at the criminal records of the candidates, which raises new questions about the party selection process and candidates’ conduct in the upcoming elections.
