Budget 2025 : The central government has made a major announcement for cab drivers, delivery boys and staff associated with online services in Delhi-Haryana in Budget 2025-26. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed Parliament that the government will implement a special scheme for identification and registration of gig workers. Under this scheme, gig workers will get social security benefits. After registering on the e-Shram portal, the workers will get the benefit of several government schemes. Under this, workers get benefits such as health insurance, accident insurance and pension.
As per the new provision, workers of gig and online platform will get the facility of identity card and registration on the e-Shram portal. This will directly benefit about 1 crore workers. This initiative will help these employees to take advantage of government schemes. Today, millions of people are working as gig labourers in food delivery, cab drivers, freelancers, and other online services. Their employment is temporary and no additional protections or benefits are offered by the companies. That is why the government has taken this important decision for these employees. The government will register gig workers on the e-Shram portal, which is already working for unorganised sector workers. Now gig workers will also be included through this portal. The scheme will be applicable primarily to food delivery officers, cab drivers, freelance designers and employees associated with other online services.
Who are the gig workers?
Gig workers are employees who are hired on a paid basis for work. These include employees working independently, employees working for online platforms, contracted firm employees, and temporary employees. This initiative by the government is a big step for gig workers. This will reduce their social safety and health concerns. In the future, the government may also implement retirement schemes and insurance facilities for them.
