Record voting of Delhi assembly elections, what does the data of last elections say?

Voting Record: With slogans like ‘Your vote, your strength’, ‘Delhi will vote from the heart’, the Election Commission is engaged in motivating voters to vote more and more in this assembly election. If the efforts of the Election Commission brought colour and the voters showed their full strength, then this electoral battle is a great opportunity to create a new vote record in front of the dominating voters of Delhi. The data from the last elections also points in this direction.

In the Lok Sabha elections held in May last year, only 58.78 per cent voter turnout was recorded in Delhi. But the data shows that Delhi voters are participating more in the assembly elections than the Lok Sabha elections. Two years after the 1991 Lok Sabha elections, there was an increase of 13.23 percent in the Delhi assembly elections held in 1993.

More voting in Assembly than Lok Sabha

This sequence continued unnecessatively except for one assembly election in 1998. This is why after the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, the Delhi assembly elections in 2013 had 14.17 per cent and two assembly elections after the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections had 2.37 per cent and two per cent more turnout respectively. This ensures that the voter turnout in this assembly election will be higher than in the Lok Sabha elections.

Record in the last three assembly elections

However, in the last three assembly elections, the voter turnout in Delhi has been over 62 per cent. The highest voter turnout was 67.47 per cent in the 2015 elections. In the last assembly elections, the voter turnout was 4.87 per cent. However, the voter turnout was 62.60 per cent. The challenge before the Commission is to increase the voting percentage while maintaining the record of the last three assembly elections. The Election Commission conducted a massive awareness campaign to increase the voting percentage.

Concert and walkathon were organised

Accordingly, the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Delhi launched an awareness campaign through about three thousand autos in all 70 assembly constituencies from January 15. Many big songs, concerts, walkathons etc. were organised. The Election Commission resorted to internet media in the voter awareness campaign.

QMS app launched for the first time

The district election offices also conducted awareness campaigns by identifying major markets, public places and areas with low voter turnout. In addition, the CEO’s office has released the QMS app for the first time and facilitated to know the number of voters queueing at the polling station. Along with this, voters will be able to reach the polling station and cast their vote when the crowd is reduced according to their convenience.

This time youth-centred polling stations have been made

A senior official in the CEO’s office said that a pink booth has been set up in every assembly constituency to motivate women to vote and a booth operated by disabled staff to motivate the disabled and youth-centric polling stations have been set up this time to motivate the youth. Arrangements have also been made for pick and drop for elderly and disabled voters.

Now it is the turn of the voters to fulfil their responsibilities. The highest record voter turnout in Delhi (71.31 per cent) was in the 1977 Lok Sabha elections. There has not been a single turnout in the Delhi Assembly elections and it is 70 per cent. This time the weather is pleasant. It is expected that more and more people will come out of the House to vote.
