Huawei May Replace Sony with Custom Camera Sensor in Pura 80 Series

Huawei custom camera sensor: Huawei has recently wrapped up a big China event that saw the Nova 14 series and its first foldable PC announced. The limelight now, however, appears to be shifting towards the brand’s upcoming highly anticipated flagships, the Huawei Pura 80 series. Going to comprise the basic Pura 80, Pura 80 Pro, and the premium Pura 80 Ultra, this next-generation series could feature major camera innovations, particularly in the Pro model.

Pura 80 Pro May Ship With Huawei’s Self-Developed Sensor

According to new leaks from popular tipster Digital Chat Station, Huawei Pura 80 Pro can abandon Sony’s standard image sensors for a custom solution. The smartphone is tipped to come equipped with a SmartSens SC5A0CS sensor, an internally developed 50-megapixel, 1-inch RYYB sensor by Huawei. This change represents a big change in the company’s camera policy, indicating more extensive in-house hardware integration.

New Strategy: From Sony IMX989 to SmartSens

Notably, this is not the first time sensor information has leaked. Previously, the same tipster alleged that Huawei was going to utilize the Sony IMX989 sensor on the Pura 80 Pro. Indeed, prototypes for the phone were reportedly tested with Sony hardware only a few months ago. Yet, current rumors indicate that Huawei switched course in the final hardware selection process, instead going with its own custom SmartSens solution.

Triple 50MP Camera Setup with RYYB Filters

While the main sensor is expected to change, the rest of the camera configuration may stay consistent with previous leaks. The Pura 80 Pro is likely to sport a 50MP ultra-wide lens and a 50MP periscope telephoto macro camera. What’s particularly noteworthy is that all three lenses may utilize Huawei’s RYYB (Red Yellow Yellow Blue) color filter technology. This filter is recognized to enhance low-light performance by admitting as much as 40% more light than standard RGB filters.

Excellent Display and Launch Schedule

Aside from its camera features, the Pura 80 Pro is expected to feature a huge 6.78-inch OLED screen with a 1.5K resolution and support for LTPO-based variable refresh rates. Such features are bound to result in a smoother and more power-efficient user experience, yet another factor that will solidify the device as a flagship seller.

Hoped-For Release in Q2 2025

If the rumors hold, Huawei’s Pura 80 series will debut in the second quarter of 2025. With the shift toward custom imaging hardware and potential upgrades in display and performance, the Pura 80 Pro could mark a major milestone in Huawei’s ongoing efforts to challenge premium competitors in the global smartphone market.
